Why should your child study self defense at Master Lowell’s MMA?

It is more important than ever to get your children involved in a martial arts program like Master Lowell’s MMA 1(321) 255-3474. Children are more likely to become victims In today’s violent society, and with the increase in crimes against children. It is victims of physical and sexual attacks and this high risk warrants a thorough study of self defense.

Children who feel less threatened may actually be less prone to aggression.
According to child education specialist Nicholas Cokinos, “Besides the three R’s (reading, writing arithmetic), every parent should ensure their child knows two things; Martial Arts and how to swim.”

Martial Arts can be a catalyst to promote self confidence, assertiveness, goal orientation, calmness, and coordination.

Grace under pressure is developed by the format of training. Apply a small amount of pressure, teach the student how to handle it, and then apply a little more. Assertiveness is developed and is the practical lesson of this type of practice or training in martial arts. Psychiatrists have recommended martial arts training for patients who lack assertiveness. Defending prearranged acts of aggression makes everyday encounters seem easy in comparison of reacting under pressure.

Martial arts lessons help young adults to study because of the heavy concentration involved. A healthy body and a healthy mind.
Martial Arts are goal oriented through the use of the individual belt color system.
Children, too, are distinguishing themselves in the martial arts and perhaps the most steadfast are these young people.

Children take it up for fun or sport, and learn poise and self defense in return.
Discipline is strongly emphasized even at a child’s young age. Each child no matter how young, and some are only 3, are taught respect both to themselves and to others. They address each other always by “Mister” and “Miss” and are truly ladies and gentlemen in the dojo.

Martial Arts training can be of great value to the child of today. Psychologists say that a person without self confidence will never develop to his or her full potential. Give your child the opportunity to participate in a program that will develop their own self confidence.

Martial arts are an excellent recreation for young people. It provides an upbeat attitude and a clear outlook on life. It helps a person to understand his or her own strengths and weaknesses, to develop courage, to mature more quickly, and to learn restraint over his or her emotions. The health oriented attitude of the martial arts might very well steer a young person away from drugs and alcohol. That alone would be a worthwhile reason for allowing kids to study the art.
Kids are empty vessels waiting to be filled. They have not been taught that they can’t do fantastic techniques and complicated movements and are therefore more likely to try 100% all the time.

Kids even as young as 5 or 6 have unlimited energy and exuberance. This is important considering the demands of the martial arts. They are more likely to be energetic and can even train several hours a day and several times a week.
What children may lack in striking power they make up in agility, which helps them to evade attack. Besides, many Orientals are of small structure, and so are their children. This has not prevented them from being accomplished martial artists.

A child who knows the martial arts may never have to fear a bully or a street tough.

Martial Arts is achievement oriented. Positive role models are present in the dojo. Exhibiting skills to the best of ones ability is all that is required. Children exhibiting determination soon apply it to their personality.

A martial arts organization can fulfill a young adults need to belong, yet it is a distinct individual sport. This allows a student to perform to his or her highest ability without feeling rejected. This is a distinct advantage of karate/MMA over team sports.

With continued training, young adults become enhanced with the mystic that surrounds the martial arts. Belonging to a group that has a positive output, children are educated and motivated away from crime, drugs, and alcohol.

Bigger Better location! & Our Executive Program

Hi everyone,
I hope you all are having a great summer. We moved from the back of the center to the front. We are conveniently located on Wickham Rd. and Mariah Dr. (Live Oak). We have upgraded our facility to over 3000' sq. ft! We have a state of the art dojo with 75 swain tatami mats, that is a 33' x 50' foot mat! The biggest in the area. We offer MMA, Kickboxing, Grappling, Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Do. We have programs for all ages starting at 3 years old and up. We specialise in children and family programs.

We have a special executive program for older enthusiasts. I recently was talking to a new older student of ours who said he did not like training at another MMA/BJJ school. Many schools say they are MMA but usually they are a BJJ school that adds boxing or Kickboxing as an after thought so that they can reap the financial gain of MMA's popularity in the media. They taught very little in the way of stand up. His complaint was that the instructor at the other school did not control his younger macho teenage and twenty something students when rolling and he recieved a prety bad neck injury.  This would never happen at Master Lowell's MMA. There was a culture of macho ego's in the other school. Who was the strongest, badest and the toughest  ruled the roost. They trained just for tournament wins and ego. No respect, no courtesy, no bowing. The Instructor was not even a black belt in any art. We at Master Lowell's MMA are a true Mixed Martial Arts Academy. We bow to each other in respect. Our Black Belt Instructors have years of experience and are true Black Belts. We have an in depth program of self defense and a curriculum that covers all aspects of combat. Our first goal is to give our students an in depth understanding of self defense against a single attacker   multiple atackers and armed attackers (knifes and guns). We certainly have some tournament champions in our school but we want our students to be competent in street smart self defense first. Our second goal is fitness. In our program women will tone up and men will get more muscular. Both genders will get fit and lose body fat for that hard ripped look. You will increase your cardio vascular health to fight heart disese. You will become more flexable and move gracfully with ease and poise. You will walk with confidence and reduce stress knowing you know how to handle yourself in virtualy any situation be it on the ground or standing up. Our third goal is to make motivated positive people with a healthy self confidence to achive your goals in the workplace at school and in life. Master Lowell's is training for life!

Fighting Fit - Mixed Martial Arts and Weight loss

If your goal is to improve your fitness or lose weight but you need to do something more exciting than jogging on a treadmill to keep you motivated, perhaps you should consider joining Master Lowell's MMA Academy. We incorporate boxing, kickboxing, karate, Krav Maga, Grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and judo all in a fun motivational environment. In this article we at Master Lowell's MMA Academy list the top 10 reasons to consider doing  martial arts for fitness and weight loss to help you decide if doing martial arts is right for you.

1. Doing martial arts for weight loss

It's no coincidence that gyms, personal trainers and producers of exercise videos and DVDs are now heavily incorporating training techniques and exercises from a wide variety of martial arts in their workouts.
Boxercise, Tae Bo, Cardio-Kickboxing, Kung Fu Aerobics, and personal trainers using punching bags, focus mitts and kicking pads in their sessions are just a couple of examples of how martial arts training is being used in cardio workouts for fitness and weight loss. Because martial art training is typically high intensity and usually lasts for at least an hour in most cases, it burns a maximum number of kilojoules or calories per workout (up to 800 or more!) and is therefore great for anyone who wants to lose weight and lose it fast.

2. Doing martial arts for fitness
At Master Lowell's we incorporate exercises and drills that improve cardiovascular fitness and endurance, help build muscle strength and improve muscle flexibility so they are perfect for anyone wanting to improve their overall fitness. Cardiovascular fitness improvements require us to regularly elevate our heart rate for extended periods and most martial arts training can help us do that. Improving the strength, size and shape of our muscles requires us to regularly subject them to some form of resistance training. Martial arts training helps provide this training by requiring us to perform exercises like push-ups and squats using our own body weight for resistance. Improved flexibility is a natural byproduct of martial arts training because most, if not all styles of martial art incorporate stretching exercises in their workouts. As a result of providing all of these fitness benefits, martial artists like boxers and kick boxers are widely regarded as being among the fittest athletes in the world and practitioners of karate, judo, etc are considered among the strongest pound-for-pound and most flexible athletes in the world.

3. Doing martial arts and self-defense
One of the most obvious benefits of doing a martial art is that it provides us with the fitness, strength, skill and techniques necessary to protect ourselves from being attacked by others who are out to harm us if the need should ever arise. Like an insurance policy, we hope you're never in a position to have to use your martial arts training to defend yourself, but it's great to know this ability is there just in case. Because they are primarily concerned with elevating our heart rates to burn energy and improve our fitness, many of the workouts listed above like Tae Bo, Boxercise, etc don't really provide this benefit to the same extent as doing martial arts training with a dedicated teacher in a martial arts school that only provides one service – to teach you a specific martial art. Many people mistakenly believe that because they punch a focus mitt 50 times during a session with their personal trainer that they know how to punch properly and can therefore defend themselves if they need to. This is a big mistake and we hope these people never find themselves in a situation where this belief is tested. Unless they've had many years of martial arts training themselves, most personal trainers and gym instructors will not be able to offer advice about your punching and kicking technique, they are only really qualified to hold the focus mitts or kick-pad for you while you punch or kick them. Remember, while probably great at what they do, these trainers are more like aerobics instructors than specifically qualified martial arts instructors. At Master Lowell's our instructors are trained in the latest in exercise physiology but more importantly are trained in the most up to date and current self defense systems. Our instructors at Master Lowell's have many years of training compared to most personal trainers who get qualified in a weekend.

4. Doing martial arts and self-confidence
In addition to providing us with the ability to defend ourselves, one of the greatest personal benefits that martial art training at Master Lowell's provides is a high degree of self-confidence. This self-confidence partly results from the knowledge that we are much better equipped to defend ourselves given that we have done some martial arts training, but it also comes from a sense of achievement once we begin to master the techniques taught to us at Master Lowell's and the new confidence that results from feeling fitter and stronger and looking fitter and stronger. Given that one of the first things to suffer, and one of the hardest things to reestablish afterwards, when we become overweight is our self-confidence this benefit is of particular value to those of us who have a weight problem.

5. Doing martial arts to improve body balance and coordination
As well as helping us to become fitter and stronger, Master Lowell's training typically involves the mastery of a range of techniques that requires us to be well-balanced and have superior body coordination. In learning to master these techniques we naturally improve our balance and our coordination which helps us with other aspects of our daily life.

6. Doing martial arts for variety
Martial art training provides great variety in two ways. Firstly, martial arts training sessions themselves have great variety built into them by including warm-ups and cool-downs, stretching exercises, strength building exercises, cardio exercises and exercises designed to improve and teach us a wide variety of techniques. This variety is great for our mind as well as our body. Secondly, at Master Lowell's there are such a wide variety of martial arts to study that we should be able to easily find one that suits our particular goals and interests. Whether we prefer to do a martial art that primarily revolves around striking or grappling techniques or a perfect mix of both, or we want to study a highly technical or very simple style, the choice is great.

7. Doing martial arts teaches discipline and provides motivation
Everybody knows that studying a martial art requires and teaches discipline. Because it is also goal orientated, training at Master Lowell's Mixed Martial Arts also provides a great deal of motivation. Lack of discipline and motivation are the most often quoted reasons for weight loss failures and for this reason, doing  martial arts for weight loss and fitness may help many of us who lack the required discipline and motivation to achieve our weight loss goals to overcome these common barriers to success.

8. Doing martial arts for spirituality
One definition of spirituality is "Activities which renew, lift up, comfort, heal and inspire both ourselves and those with whom we interact." Martial art training has been practiced by millions of people over many centuries because among other things, it has a great ability to spiritually uplift us. At Master Lowell's we are forging a better connection between our mind and body, it also has the ability to forge a better connection between us and our world and us and others.

9. Doing martial arts training is relatively inexpensive
Compared to hiring a personal trainer, training at Master Lowell's is relatively inexpensive. We charge a very modest monthly fee for training and the beauty of this is you can train when and as often as it suits you. In addition to low ongoing training costs, compared to buying gym equipment (weights) or golf clubs, tennis racket and the latest pair of athletic shoes, buying a uniform and any equipment you may need to train in most cases will be relatively inexpensive as well.

10. Doing martial arts has a social aspect
Many people who start doing martial arts training for weight loss, improved fitness or self-defense end up enjoying it most for its social aspects. As well as training and learning with others with similar goals, many martial arts trainees form an informal support network to help encourage and motivate each other. Through this association, many of these martial artists end up becoming very good friends. Master Lowell has a very friendly disposition and fosters a fun and friendly environment in which to train which endears him to his students who typically also become close friends.

Conclusion
Many people have the misinformed opinion that martial arts schools are full of children hoping to learn how to defend themselves against playground bullies or thugs wanting to learn how to beat people up. Nothing could be further from the truth. Martial arts schools are typically full of people like you and me who want to get fitter and stronger, lose weight and make new friends. Good luck with your weight loss and please call 321.255.3474 to set an appointment and discuss your goals. Please visit or web site at http://www.jlmma.com/

Kids who participate in team sports may be getting less exercise than they think

Kids who participate in team sports may be getting less exercise than they think, a study finds. Soccer players were active for a bit longer than baseball and softball players.

At Master Lowell’s MMA you can be sure kids will get there 60 minutes of exercise recommended by Pediatricians. At Master Lowell’s we work on three aspects of fitness that are essential to children’s health and well being. First we work on flexibility. Every class at Master Lowell’s opens with a series of yoga stretches and postures. Next we work on endurance with cardio vascular training consisting of aerobic exercise such as running, hitting various pads, shadow boxing and repetition drills. Then we finish with strength training. Body weight exercise and various calisthenics complete our workouts. Master Lowell emphasizes healthy eating habits and educates kids on proper nutrition. At Master Lowell’s, children get a self esteem boost from learning mixed martial Arts, along with self defense techniques that gives kid’s confidence that they can defend themselves in any situation on the ground or standing up. Master Lowell’s is just what the Pediatrician ordered a healthy body and mind.

Many parents encourage their kids to take part in team sports, thinking they'll get their recommended daily activity. But a new study suggests that children who play sports might not get enough daily exercise, and teens may get even less.

The study, released today in the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, looked at how much exercise 200 kids age 7 to 14 got while playing team soccer, baseball or softball. The children wore accelerometers that tracked movement and intensity during team practice time, which ranged from 40 to 130 minutes for soccer and 35 to 217 minutes for baseball and softball.

Researchers discovered that among all participants, only 24% got the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity during practices. The news for teens was even worse -- only 10% of children age 11 to 14 reached that amount. All participants averaged about 45 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity.

The sports, chosen for their popularity and different activity levels, did show disparities. Soccer players were active for an average of 13.7 minutes more than those who played baseball or softball.

Boys outdid girls during practice, spending on average 10.7 more minutes being active. And both boys and girls were inactive for an average 30 minutes per practice.

In the study, the authors wrote, "The health effects of youth sports could be improved by adopting policies and practices that ensure youth obtain sufficient physical activity during practices: emphasizing participation over competition, sponsoring teams for all skill levels across all ages.

At Master Lowell’s MMA Academy we emphasize participation at your own pace. Competition is to oneself for oneself. We train kids individually according to their needs both mentally and physically. The instructors at Master Lowell’s will work with children in a disciplined yet fun environment. Encouraging children to be their best and give their best in school, sports and at the academy. If your child needs a great fitness program along with the confidence and achievement of learning the art of self defense. Alternative to ball sports

In traditional ball sports, there are so many negative situations that cause a loss of self esteem for a child. Not hitting the home run, not hitting the ball, not making the catch, not scoring a goal, the negative comments, the put downs, the sitting on the bench, the coach’s dirty looks, and the bullying from others. This is not an enjoyable endeavor for a child. We want fitness and health for our children. We want a good experience. We want the life lessons for our children of being able to protect themselves from harm both mentally and physically. We want to teach them about setting and achieving goals.

An alternative option to ball sports exists for children who have no desire to kick something around a field for an hour. Consider investigating Master Lowell’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy. Children who participate at Master Lowell’s MMA feel accomplished and happier by what they’ve achieved. Master Lowell’s MMA program helps children to develop attention to detail, and allow them to become more comfortable with their body and how it works.

For example, Master Lowell’s Mixed Martial Arts are an art and sport that incorporates a variety of different techniques and skills for combat with an opponent. While this art/sport is physically intensive, children who practice at Master Lowell’s MMA have greater coordination, dexterity and concentration. Children improve their flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and strength. Children attain many benefits from the discipline it takes to master the techniques to earn their belts. Parents often cite the positive reinforcement children receive while participating at Master Lowell’s MMA as one of the major benefits of such an activity

By involving your children and family at Master Lowell’s MMA, you’ll be encouraging them to use their skills and abilities to achieve self confidence and a confident self assured child is a successful child. Working with your child to develop their athletic abilities will encourage them to commit themselves to something worthwhile that they enjoy, and reward that commitment down the road with greater fitness and positive self image. Furthermore, the self-esteem boost your child will experience through their participation at Master Lowell’s MMA will allow them to live a happier, successful well-adjusted life.
